Dependent on state and local laws, the debt buyer may have to be licensed in order to sue you for the past due debt. Many states, counties and cities have a public website where you can easily search and validate the debt collector license. Some localities also require the license number to written on the summons or complaint. If these conditions are not met, the court may dismiss your case.
